I tried to trade the wind your name she only laughed and blew away but I over heard her as she sang “there’s nothing I would trade” but something silver, something blue and only when I think of you I guess there’s nothing I can do If the wind won’t trade your name But I’m saving my wages and I’ll have enough for the payment what’s best in everything I guess we’re pretending it’s never ending From faded shores where your steps remain a thousand miles you’ve walked my way silent as you roll the dice the signal climbed the ladder twice your glow it makes me weep a thousand times I pray to keep But I’m saving my wages and I’ll have enough for the payment what’s best in everything I guess we’re pretending it’s never ending keep playing, yeah I’ll fade it It’s long enough for the payment intense and interesting and always pretending it’s never ending what’s best in everything the prick of the needle It’s just the mending

Would You? 03:26
In the town where I grew up I met a girl she was lovely enough I said to her Would you like to fall in love with me? now tell me girl Would you like to fall in love with me? now tell me girl Well you know she took my hand and we walked away and I can’t understand why she would stay Would you like to fall in love with me? now tell me girl Would you like to fall in love with me? now tell me girl

about

These recordings were made at National Freedom in Cottage Grove, Oregon in early September 2018, two months after Richard Swift passed away.

After Richard died his wife Shealynn reached out and asked if we would come to Cottage Grove and work and record in the studio. HIs family wanted to make sure that the music would continue at National Freedom and it meant a lot to us to have the opportunity to reconnect with Richard and a place that has played a really important role in our music over the years.

When we arrived at the studio we found it to be much the same as we’d always known it to be, a sacred place where our friend made sense of his influences and helped us make sense of ours. After he passed Richard’s family brought his ashes home and placed them in the control room of the studio in the chair at the console in front of the monitors where Rich always sat during sessions. On the box his birth name could be seen simply written: RICARDO OCHOA.

As we were working I was doing something I often do, I started writing the same word over and over again and in this instance the word was RICARDO. As I wrote his name repeatedly it started to shift and soon it transformed and I started writing the word CARRIDO over and over again.

For us Carrido became a world where we could be with our friend again, a place where we could be together one more time doing what we love. It’s a place where we can make sense of the things that happen that feel tragic and inexplicably heart breaking….it’s a place where we can go to find our way back to ourselves again.

about

Pure Bathing Culture Portland, Oregon

A duo with a knack for making music that sounds unearthly yet familiar. The beautiful strangeness of Sarah Versprille and Daniel Hindman's music dominated their 2013 debut album Moon Tides; on later albums, such as 2015's Pray for Rain and 2019's Night Pass, they streamlined their sound and put their catchy songwriting front and center. ... more
